Abstract

The Battery of Assessment of High Abilities/Giftedness (BAHA/G) is a psychological instrument, which is based on a broader conception of giftedness, like the Three Ring Conception of Giftedness. This work aimed to investigate the evidences of convergent validity for this instrument through the comparison of the scores on the BAHA/G’s intelligence subtests and the Non-Verbal Test of Children's Reasoning (NVTCR). For this, 125 brazilian students with ages between 12 and 17 years old (M=13.05; SD=1.17) participated in this study, 48 (38.4%) female and 77 (61.6%) male were part of the investigated sample. The data analyses consisted on descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis of variance, in order to comprehend the possible age, gender and educational influences. Pearson’s correlation was also used to investigate convergent validity between the intelligence subtests from BAHA/G and NVTCR. The results showed that there were no gender, age and educational influences on the NVTCR, however educational influences were observed on BAHA/G in the logical reasoning subtest. According to Pearson’s correlation analysis there are significant correlations ranging between 0.358 and 0.667. Taking the total result on both instruments, the correlation value between the measures was expected for this kind of study (r=0.646; p≤0.01). The results also showed significant correlations between all the intelligence subtests of BAHA/G, including its total, with NVTCR’s factor 1 and total. In conclusion, the study showed statistically significant correlations between BAHA/G and the other instrument that measures the same construct, confirming that it has the convergence evidence investigated. Therefore, it is possible to say that the intelligence subtests investigated is valid. Future studies should be conducted in order to verify other psychometric characteristics of the BAHA/G.
