Abstract

The Bender Gestalt Test is a psychological test, developed by Bender in 1938, used for the assessments of maturity of the visual-motor organization, brain injuries and emotional disorders. There are several systems of administration and scoring, being one of the most known the Koppitz´s system. One of the newest assessment systems is the Bender Koppitz-2, which is a review and extension of the original Koppitz, developed to evaluate the visual-motor integration ability. The main difference between them is the addition of new drawings easier for younger children and more difficult for older, besides the original nine. In the Koppitz system are scored the errors in copying the drawings and, in the new version, the correct reproduction. The purpose of this work was to investigate the validity of the Koppitz-2 system to children from Brazilian public schools. The sample consisted of 405 children, being 50.6% female, with ages ranged from 6 to 12 years (average = 8.86 years, SD = 1.89) and education between the first and the ninth year of study. The validity was investigated by the relationship with the Nonverbal Intelligence Test R-2, the copy phase of the Rey Complex Figures and the Koppitz system of Bender, all applied individually. The analyses were made separately for children of 6 and 7 years old and 8-12 years old, because the items evaluated are different. The results showed correlations between 0.616 and 0.639 for 6-7 years and between 0.647 and 0.778 for the 8-12 years old with the Rey Complex Figure, regarding the R-2, between 0.542 and 0.638 (6-7 years) and 0.439 and 0.667 (8-12 years), and with the Koppitz system between -0.566 and -0.646. The results indicated adequate validity indices for the Koppitz-2 System, confirming the possibility of its use for evaluation of visual-motor integration between 6 and 12 years.
