Abstract

Introduction Psychological aggression in dating relationships has been identified by the presence of jealous and dominance behavior by one or both partners.

Objectives This study analyzes the psychometric properties of the Dominating and Jealous Tactisc Scale (Kasian and Painter, 1992) that assess two different types of psychological aggression in adolescents' dating relationships.

Methodology The sample consisted of 5,355 adolescents from different High Schools of Madrid (Spain). To analyze the structure factor of the scales, we conducted a Confirmatory Factor Analysis, adopting the two-factor structure of the original version. The goodness-of-fit indexes used to assess the CFA are goodness of fit index (GFI), adjusted goodness of fit index (AGFI) and root mean-square error of approximation (RMSEA).

Results The results supported the two-factor structure for the scale which was consistent with the theory and with previous research. The first factor was named "key tactics" because it brought together a number of items related to behavior aimed at controlling the activities of the victim with their family, relationships and pesonal well-being. The second factor was called "jealous tactics", and includes a set of items that involve the desire to possess the other person. The goodness-of-fit indexes were satisfactory (GFI=.95; AGFI=.92; RMSEA=.08).

Conclusions. Finally, the potential applications of this scales are discussed, and it is conclude that is a useful tool to assess psychological aggression  in dating relationships in young couples.
